Why the Washington Commanders’ ‘Hail Mary’ win could put Kamala Harris in the White House

The outcome of the team’s final home game before voting day has been a reliable indicator of the result in 17 of the last 21 elections

The Washington Commanders’ last-minute Hail Mary victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday dictates that Kamala Harris will win the presidential election, according to superstition.
The outcome of the Washington Commanders’ final home game before voting day has been a reliable indicator of the result in 17 of the last 21 elections.
On Sunday, the Washington team were on the brink of defeat, when quarterback Jayden Daniels pulled off a 52-yard hail Mary pass as the clock went into the red.
The 18-15 victory helped the Commanders retain their lead in the The National Football Conference East and, for superstitious forecasters, may also have implications for the presidential race.

Going back as far as 1937, when the team first moved to Washington, victory for the Commanders in their final home game before election day has been a reliable indicator that the incumbent party would hold onto the White House. If the Commanders lost, the challenging party would prevail, according to the legend known as the Redskins Rule.
The Washington side’s comeback should therefore, in theory, be a good omen for Ms Harris and may spark concern among Republicans.
However, the bellwether result has miscalculated the last three elections, including in 2020 – when the team changed its name from the Redskins.
It comes as the polls show Ms Harris and Trump are neck and neck with just a week to go until election day.
